G05 Front Passenger Airbag System Technical Specifications and After-sales Guidelines

 Latest company case about G05 Front Passenger Airbag System Technical Specifications and After-sales Guidelines
System Composition and Working Principle

Hardware composition: Front passenger airbag module (inside the dashboard), occupant identification sensor (OC3/OCS), seat belt locking switch, SRS control unit (ACU), collision acceleration sensor.

Trigger mechanism: The ACU combines the signals from the frontal collision sensors with the occupant identification status. The gas generator will only be detonated when the deceleration exceeds the calibrated threshold (typically for severe mid-to-high speed collisions) and an adult occupant is identified.

2. Automatic Deactivation Function

Sensor principle: Based on the pressure/capacitive sensor matrix under the seat cushion, the weight distribution is calculated.

Deactivation conditions: Identification as an empty seat, a standard child seat (ECE R44/04 or i-Size), or a passenger whose weight is below the set threshold.

Instruction logic: When the system is in the deactivated state, the "Passenger Airbag OFF" indicator light on the central instrument panel or ceiling will remain constantly illuminated.

3. False Alarm and Diagnosis

False alarm phenomenon: The indicator light remains on when adults are riding.

Reasons: Unstandard sitting posture (such as kneeling, standing on one leg), installation of non-original seat cushions (changing capacitance values), unsecured seat slide rails, loose plugs in the seat.

Procedure:

  1. Return to standard sitting position;
  2. Check the connection of the seat wiring;
  3. Use the ISTA diagnostic system to read the "B7Fxxx" series fault codes and perform seat standardization calibration (Seat Calibration).
4. Post-Crash Repair Specifications

Irreparability: The airbag module, gas generator, and seat belt tensioner are all one-time-use components. Once they are detonated, they must be replaced with brand-new original parts. Repair or use of second-hand parts is strictly prohibited.

Items to be inspected:

  • Replace the passenger airbag module.
  • Check and, if necessary, replace the ACU (if the trigger count exceeds the limit).
  • Check whether the clock spring (Slip Ring) and the insulation layer of the wiring harness are damaged.
  • Clear the fault codes and conduct the road test to ensure that the self-check is successful.
5. Remodeling and Maintenance Warning

Prohibition of modification: It is strictly prohibited to install brackets or covers on the dashboard, and it is also strictly prohibited to modify the SRS wiring.

Seat cover restrictions: If seat covers are to be installed, only products certified by BMW are allowed. Ensure that the side airbag rupture holes are reserved and that the OC3 sensor signals are not affected.

Battery disconnected: Before performing any operations involving seat removal or steering wheel adjustment, the negative terminal of the low-voltage battery must be disconnected. Wait for more than 3 minutes before proceeding to avoid static electricity ignition.
